There is a Wing Chun kuen kuit that says: “Very few completely master the art”. With the increase in the number of people world-wide learning Wing Chun one would expect a corresponding increase in the number of those who completely master it. Yet this seems not to be the case. I think there are several reasons for this. They relate to the conditions that must exist for mastery to be attained. These include finding a genuine lineage; finding a fully qualified sifu who themself has mastered the art and who is able and willing to teach you; having the necessary ability; having the opportunity to train the amount and length of time required to master the art and actually putting in the time on perfect practice. It is intriguing that so many practitioners may think that these conditions are in place for them. If it were correct then we’d have many more true masters. So, one has to think: why is it that so very few practitioners completely master the art?
